Structure: Setting

What contribution to the story is made by its setting? Is the particular setting essential, or could the story have happened anywhere?

  1. The setting changes as the story changes. The first part of the novel takes place in Lantern Yard where Marner is happily engaged and takes part in many religious activities. When he is accused of crimes he did not commit, he exiles himself to Raveloe. I think the complete change of setting solidifies the fact that he left his old life behind and he was starting a new chapter. The new setting was like a clean slate for him and he could be whoever and do whatever he pleased. I think the story could have taken place wit the change in the setting but I don’t think it would’ve been as effective. The knowledge of the previous setting also gives the reader a good knowledge in Marner’s life so far and what he has gone through.
